Interview with a Puggle Owner

Benjamin J. is a ladies’ hairdresser and the love of his life is Sasha, the new puggle puppy who entered his life on the demise of his Bichon Frise Frederika. Here is Benjamin’s story:

“I grew up on a farm, where we always had big dogs… Border Collies to do their work on the land and German Shepherds to guard my parents’ home. I always fancied a poodle, myself, but the family wouldn’t hear of it. Not on a farm. My father said that if I wanted a small animal for a pet, I could make do with the old tomcat that had been prowling around the place since forever.”

Benjamin had always been an animal lover and read every book and magazine he could get hold of about dogs.

As soon as he was old enough to leave home and set up in business for himself, he set out to buy the sort of little dog that he could take to work with him, one that would be happy to settle into life at the salon and be friendly to his clients.

Frederika, his Bichon Frise was bequeathed to him by an elderly client who knew her dog was going to a good home. Then along came Sasha.

“And my life has never been the same since”, explained Benjamin.  ”She’s been with me six months now and she’s a real little bundle of fun. She has a big box full of toys in the corner near the dryers and my older ladies love to watch her playing with them.

“Sasha wallows in their attention and I suspect that the minute my back’s turned, she’s given biscuits and other little treats. I don’t mind, though because I keep a close watch her weight. And I give her plenty of walks. She may be only little but she needs plenty of exercise. And I give her as much attention as I give my clients… more, some might say.

“To keep her coat nice and shiny, I brush her every day, and on the advice of her breeders, I clean out her ears every week. She gets loads of exercise too. Half an hour’s walk to the salon every morning and another half an hour back home again.

“Is the puggle an ideal dog?” I ask.

“Well I can’t speak for others, but she’s certainly the perfect pet for me”, replies Benjamin
