Leather or Synthetic: When It Comes to Softball Mitts, Material Matters

Softball is a team game that has endured many generations. And although the materials and equipment used in playing the game has undergone a lot of developments, thanks to modern technology, many have managed to stay the same. Take the case of softball mitts.

Softball mitts have been traditionally hand-stitched using high-quality leather. While some softball mitt manufacturers today still produce hand-stitched products, and use the same types of leather that have been traditionally used, many have also resorted to using synthetic leather.

Of course, professional softball players will be quick to tell you that there is nothing better than leather mitts when it comes to performance. But, of course, there are also advantages and disadvantages whether you are using genuine leather or synthetic leather mitts.

Leather mitts are usually made of steerhide or buffalo hide. The more expensive leather mitts can be expected to last longer than the cheaper ones, but they also tend to be heavier and more difficult to handle, especially when they are fresh out of the sports shop. To get the most out of a genuine leather mitt, you will have to break it in for a few days.

In contrast, synthetic mitts are often made of such materials as plastic or vinyl. They are softer and more manageable the true leather, and do not require a lot of breaking in. However, these are not advisable for people who plan to play for a long time or as a career because they are not as durable. In terms of performance, many players have also found that it is easier to field the ball using a genuine leather mitt than when you are using a mitt made of synthetic material.

Any softball player will tell you that a mitt is the single most crucial thing you will need when playing. As such, it is important that you put much thought into the type of material that you want for your mitt.
