For anybody considering computer repair employment as an alternate career, there are some key things to realize. This article takes a look at four key facts relating to the levels of experience and training required to enter this profession.
1: You will always need to balance training with training with client recruitment. This is true of many types of jobs, but is even more apt in PC repairs. Technologies are changing so quickly that it is impossible for any one person to be fully clued into every area of technology and product that they will have to encounter. As a result, this profession requires you to be continually updating your skills through personal and work related training.
2: Target the training that you do. The majority of people will already have a certain amount of PC repair experience as part of their own everyday life. As a result, you may only require some additional specialist training in specific areas (e.g. data recovery, disk drive upgrades, online PC repairs, et cetera). To get the most from this training, you should seek out where your weak areas are, research available training and pursue a course which is of interest to you, whether that is in night classes, trade schools or self-paced study.
3: Getting certification is no guarantee of getting a job. Having various certifications on your CV/resume will look impressive and may improve your chances of finding a role. However, many employers will in fact be more interested in hands-on experience and genuine interest in the technologies being used.
4: Make good use of partner/reseller programs as a cheap way of training yourself. Many software and hardware vendor’s offer such programs whereby you can purchase products at a reduced rate and become familiar with these tools/applications/hardware components at your own pace. Many of these programs also provide various workshops, presentations and additional support services that regular users will never experience.
As you gain more computer repair employment experience it will become apparent which areas and technologies you will wish to focus on. As a result, this will inform which training courses you pursue and which jobs you target.
