A metal detector can be optimized to function as an effective gold detector as well. Detecting metal with a machine is not as easy as it sounds and even though many people have found various valuable items such as watches and jewelry, the types of metal most often found using a metal detector is scrap metal.
However, if a person finds gold scrap, such as broken earrings, bracelets, necklaces and other scrap jewelry, then they are in luck. A person who finds scrap metal and gold can sell the scrap gold for a good price. Because gold fetches an average price of $1950 per troy ounce, selling even the smallest amount of scrap gold can bring the seller a decent amount of pocket cash.
Early gold detectors worked by using a magnetic field produced by an alternating electrical current that passed through coils. Because all metals produce an electric current, when they were near the detector coils, an alternating field was produced. When the field is produced, a separate coil detects the change and alerts the user with a sound. These metal detectors were used to find mines and other weapons in the 1930s. In later years, metal detectors used a radio frequency that was given off by the coil in addition to a beat frequency oscillator or the Induction Balance, both of which consisted of a low frequency electrical current.
In modern times, the detectors use what is called Pulse Induction that consists of emitting an electrical signal into the ground. Each signal that passes through to the round decays at a slow rate. If the signal hits a metal object, the time it takes for that voltage number to come back to zero is quicker than if it had hit the ground. However, until recent times, the differences in the time it took the voltages to hit zero again were so small they made no difference to the person using the machine because they could not recognize the change in most cases.
Nevertheless, modern technology has changed this again and improvements were made to the detectors so that many have the ability to not only detect crap metal and valuable gold, but they have the ability to tell the difference between the various scrap items as well. This gives them the ability to take items they find or leave them, thus becoming more productive when searching for scrap. Now that you know how to use your detector you can sell scrap gold and recouperate some of the money you paid for it.
