With many people incorporating computers into their home theater, people find themselves asking how do you connect a laptop to a tv. While it’s often as easy as a single cable, it’s tough to know what cable to use. There are high definition, and standard definition signals as well as digital and analog signals. It’s important to understand the difference between these, and to know what both your laptop and TV are capable of, in order figure out how to connect laptop to TV.
First, have a look at your laptop. Does it have an HDMI or DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort? Great! These are the best ways to hook up your laptop to your tv because they are digital signals, which are the best, and will carry your HD content. They also all carry digital Surround Sound audio, which is the best kind of audio. Most TVs have HDMI inputs these days, but not Mini DisplayPort, or DisplayPort. Luckily these are compatible signal types, so all you need a simple little converter if you don’t have HDMI outputs on your computer. Either way, they will all end up going into your TV via HDMI carrying both an HD image, and great surround sound.
If you have an older computer, and it doesn’t have any of the above outputs, then you’re going to have to stick with analog methods. VGA is the best of these methods, as it is capable of very high resolutions. S-Video will be the next best option, and RCA will be your final option. If you have VGA it’s likely that you will have to use a VGA to RCA or S-Video converter. You will also need a converter for the audio, which will be in the form of a 3.5mm (headphone) to RCA audio (red/white).
That should cover the question of how do you connect your laptop to your TV. If you have any other questions about your specific connections, feel free to ask in the comments.
