No matter how committed you are to following a healthy diet, eating right can be challenging from time to time. When time is tight and you are starving, it is very easy to reach for a convenient but unhealthy alternative. If you tend to fall into the pattern of eating the same things over and over again, this can make matters worse. When you are bored with your diet, it can become much more difficult to resist temptation.
To sustain a healthy eating diet over the long haul, it is critical that you find foods that are good for you that you like. Are there a few healthy foods that you really enjoy? Why not get a new cookbook and learn different ways to prepare them?
To give you an example, one of my biggest challenges in following a healthy diet is that I really like dips. Things got easier when I learned how to prepare bean dips so that they were good for me. Now hummus has become a regular part of my diet. In fact, I have a hummus recipe that I make just about every week. Hummus can be easily prepared at home by combining chick peas, tahini, olive oil, lemon just and garlic. It is the perfect snack because it provides your body with a good source of vegetarian protein. To mix things up, try adding in herbs, spices and vegetables. I like adding in either red peppers that a roast at home or sun dried tomatoes. Another great way to heat your hummus up is by adding in extra garlic, chili powder, cumin, cayenne pepper and cilantro. If you want to keep things really healthy, instead of buying pita chips, make your own chips with whole grain tortillas. I enjoy this snack and it never leaves me feeling deprived.
Sticking with a healthy diet has also been made much easier for me by eating quinoa. Carbohydrates have always been something that I enjoy. However, I know that white carbohydrates, like pasta and rice, are not the healthiest options. My children love home aid macaroni and cheese, but it is not something I like to feed them every day. I am very thankful that there are so many great quinoa recipes out there that we can enjoy. Quinoa salad is one of my favorite ways to cook quinoa right now, but I also love quinoa soup and stir fry!
